Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Day Skipper Revision.

About the Tool

What is Day Skipper Revision?

Day Skipper Revision is an interactive study tool built around the RYA Day Skipper theory syllabus. It covers all 17 modules with learning content, quizzes, spaced-repetition flashcards, and interactive visual tools for the hardest topics like tides, COLREGs, and compass work.

Is this an official RYA product?

No. Day Skipper Revision is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) in any way. The content is based on publicly available nautical standards, regulations, and widely taught sailing theory.

Will this replace the RYA theory course?

No — this is a revision companion, not a replacement. The RYA Day Skipper theory course covers practical chartwork exercises, instructor-led teaching, and assessment that this tool cannot replicate. Use this alongside your course to reinforce what you've learned and identify areas that need more work.

How many modules are there?

There are 17 modules covering the full Day Skipper theory syllabus: Nautical Terms, Safety, Marine Environment, COLREGs, Pilotage, Compass, Visual Aids, Tides, Chartwork, Position/Course/Speed, Charts & Publications, Meteorology, Passage Planning, Restricted Visibility, Ropework, Anchorwork, and Drawing Instruments.

What are the interactive tools?

Six modules include interactive visual tools built specifically for the hardest exam topics:

• Buoyage Trainer — learn and quiz yourself on IALA Region A buoy marks with day/night views

• Lights & Shapes — identify vessel navigation lights under COLREGs

• Compass Converter — practise True/Magnetic/Compass conversions with the CDMVT mnemonic

• Tidal Curve Trainer — step through tidal height calculations with an interactive curve

• Vector Triangle Builder — visualise course to steer calculations with a practice mode

• Forecast Decoder — decode shipping forecast terminology with the Beaufort Scale

Pricing & Payment

How much does it cost?

3 modules are completely free (Nautical Terms, Safety, and Marine Environment). Full access to all 17 modules, interactive tools, and mock exams costs a one-time payment of £4.99 — no subscription, no recurring charges.

Why isn't it all free?

Building and maintaining quality educational content takes significant time. The £4.99 price keeps the tool ad-free, well-maintained, and focused entirely on helping you learn. It's less than the cost of a coffee and covers a fraction of what you'd spend on textbooks.

Is it a subscription?

No. It's a one-time payment. You pay once and have lifetime access. There are no recurring charges, no auto-renewals, and no hidden fees.

Can I get a refund?

If you're not satisfied, contact us within 14 days of purchase and we'll process a full refund, no questions asked. We want you to feel confident in your purchase.

Access & Devices

How does access work?

When you complete your purchase, your access is stored in your browser. You can start using all modules and tools immediately — no account or login required.

What if I clear my browser data?

Your access can always be restored using the email verification process described above. Stripe keeps a permanent record of your purchase, so you'll never lose access permanently.

Do I need to create an account?

Creating an account is optional but recommended. Without an account, your progress is stored locally in your browser. With a free account, your quiz scores, flashcard states, and exam history sync across all your devices automatically.

Does my quiz progress sync across devices?

Yes — if you create a free account and sign in, your progress, quiz scores, flashcard history, and exam results sync across all your devices automatically. Without an account, data is stored locally in your browser only.

Studying & Exams

What's the best way to use this tool?

We recommend working through the modules in order, as they build on each other. For each module: read the learning content first, then test yourself with the quiz, and use flashcards for ongoing revision. Use the interactive tools for the topics you find hardest. Take the mock exam when you feel ready — aim for 85% or higher.

How does spaced repetition work?

The flashcard system uses the SM-2 algorithm to schedule reviews at optimal intervals. When you rate a card as "Easy", it won't appear again for a while. Cards rated "Hard" or "Didn't know" come back sooner. This spaces out your revision so you review material just before you'd forget it — the most efficient way to move knowledge into long-term memory.

How does the mock exam work?

The mock exam randomly selects 30 questions from across all modules. It's timed (aim for under 45 minutes) and gives you instant feedback after each question. At the end, you receive an RYA-style grade (Good, Average, Fair, or Poor) along with a breakdown of your performance by topic, so you know exactly where to focus your revision.

What grade do I need to pass?

On the real RYA assessment, a "Good" or "Average" grade is a pass. In our mock exam, that corresponds to roughly 70% or above. We recommend aiming for 85%+ to give yourself a comfortable margin.
